The one-day entitlement will cost almost as much as the 10-day one.
This option should be introduced in Hungary as a requirement of an EU regulation. However, they have chosen a solution that we do not want to use!
An EU agreement was reached in 2022 on tolls, that they should not be time-based but usage-based for all categories of vehicles! Distance-based charging for cars and vans should be introduced by 2027. The option to keep the old system will remain in place in the country, only on the EU trunk road network should the switch to distance-based charging be made in any case.
In principle, the obligation to have a one-day entitlement is mainly due to transit vehicles. The cheapest fare should not cost more than 9 percent of the annual toll entitlement. This only applies to the one-day fare! It is easy to calculate that today the price of a D1 category annual sticker is 57,260,-Ft, so for a one-day use you will be charged 5153,-Ft! In contrast, a 10-day sticker costs 6400,-Ft. The transit passenger usually travels backwards, so the one-day sticker will probably not be a big “success”!
In the neighbouring Austria, they have already decided that the price for a one-day sticker will be 8,60 Euro! Even with our weakened forint it is cheaper than here, but we are not surprised!
